Cornwall Furnace

Photo

Cornwall Furnace, is between Cedar Bluff & Gaylesville, was one of three Cherokee County Furnaces supplying iron to the confederacy.

Commissioned in 1863 by the Noble Brothers of Rome, Georgia and named for their native Cornwall, England home, this cold blast furnace furnished iron for the first cannon made in Rome, Georgia. Twice ordered destroyed by Sherman, the furnace survived the war only to be destroyed in an industrial explosion around 1870. Cornwall Furnace was declared a National Historical site in 1972, and is perhaps the best preserved stack in the southeast.
